About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Latin American Data in Science (LADS) is a multidisciplinary journal. Its purpose is to disseminate information stored in the form of datasets that can be used in new research and in the expansion of the network of partnerships between researchers in different areas. LADS is published electronically in a rolling pass, online, open access format. LADS uses double-blind peer review, accepting data papers in Portuguese, English and Spanish.

Mission

The mission of Latin American Data in Science (LADS) is:

  1. publish articles in data papers format, which have been results of scientific research in any area of knowledge;
  2. to expand the use of previously collected data, favoring the elaboration of new research and, consequently, new articles with different hypotheses and analyses;
  3. to favor the convergence of researchers from different areas, expanding the research and innovation networks.

Qualis

LADS has not yet gone through the evaluation process of CAPES for its classification in Qualis.

Section Policies

Editorial

Section dedicated to editorials written by the LADS editor or invited authors.

Articles

This section exclusively publishes articles in data paper format, which present a robust dataset, predominantly of primary data, and with scientific methods that enable their use in scientific production.

Articles should be submitted via the official LADS website and should be structured using the template provided by the journal, preferably containing between 5 and 10 pages.

Peer Review Process

Articles submitted to LADS go through three stages of evaluation during the editorial process:

  • Adequacy to standards/format (Assistant Editor);
  • Admission evaluation (Editor);
  • Evaluation of merit (anonymous reviewers).

The Adequacy to Norms stage assesses whether the submission was submitted using the template/template made available by the journal and whether all required fields were filled in. It checks for indications that may identify the authors and verifies the possibility of access to the dataset that makes up the article.

Admission evaluates whether the dataset submitted is characterized as primary information and whether it is robust enough in terms of data volume and variables to be characterized as an article in data paper format.

The evaluation of merit is performed by members of the scientific board and/or external reviewers, from institutions other than the author's, always considering the suitability and experience of the reviewer to the theme of the article. The evaluation is done in double-blind and the selection of reviewers is done by consulting the journal's database, where we rely on information provided by reviewers at the time of their registration and/or by inserting information based on the Lattes curriculum vitae.

In order to optimize the editorial process, the reviewer has 48 hours to confirm acceptance of the invitation to review the article, which, if accepted, is automatically released via the electronic system. If no confirmation is received by the stipulated deadline, the reviewer is informed of the removal of the invitation, and a new reviewer is indicated. The process is repeated until two reviewers confirm their invitation to review the article.

Together with the article, the reviewer receives an evaluation guideline to standardize the review process and make the evaluation of merit standardized among different reviewers. The article will have one of the following opinions: Accepted; Accepted with minor mandatory corrections; Resubmit for evaluation; and Reject, with or without comments. The review process and the evaluation process takes up to 7 days.

After receiving the opinion, the editor is responsible for making the editorial decision, considering the recommendations of the reviewers and, when necessary, requesting new evaluations so that divergent opinions can be complemented.

The final editor's opinion can be: Approved; Rejected; Approved with adjustments.

When the article's decision is Approved, the corresponding author is informed and will be informed of the payment methods for the publication fee. The article will be forwarded for editing when the payment of the publication fee is confirmed.

When the article is disapproved, the author will receive a message from the editor informing that the article has been rejected, and, when available, the reviewers' considerations will be forwarded.

When the article's opinion is Approved with adjustments, the corresponding author will receive a message from the editor containing the decision and the reviewers' evaluations. The author will have 30 days to return the revised article to LADS, and the editor has up to 7 days to approve, reject, or request a new peer review. The process ends when a final decision is made to approve or reject the article, and the author is notified by the editor.

Periodicity

LADS adopts a continuous flow publishing system, according to international scientific journal trends. In practice this means that as soon as an article approved for publication is ready and edited, it will be published.

Open access policy

LADS offers free access to its content in PDF format, following the principle that making scientific knowledge freely available to the public provides greater worldwide democratization of knowledge.

By submitting an article to LADS, the author allows the right to publish approved and published articles to be automatically transferred to LADS, allowing the article to be published in this journal and also shared with acknowledgment of authorship, according to the Creative Commons License CC-BY 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/deed.pt_BR), which indicates the following: this is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which allows unrestricted use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, as long as the original work is properly cited.
